Description
Alexandria, Egypt’s northern capital, is one of Egypt’s most beautiful and unusual cities, located on the Mediterranean coast. Founded by Alexander the Great, Alexandria has been a centre of science, culture and trade for centuries. Today, this city attracts tourists from all over the world with its unique combination of ancient heritage, oriental atmosphere and seascapes.
Our two-day excursion will give you a unique opportunity to enjoy this wonderful city and its rich history at your leisure, visiting all the main attractions over two days. You will also be able to see Alexandria in the evening — it is truly beautiful.
Day 1: Departure from Hurghada at around 1:30 a.m., the journey to Alexandria will take approximately 7-7.5 hours. Arrival in Alexandria at around 10:00 a.m. We will visit the famous Catacombs of Kom el-Shukafa, one of the most mysterious and significant attractions in Alexandria, but rarely accessible on a day trip. These are the largest ancient Roman catacombs in Egypt, created in the 2nd-3rd centuries AD, where Egyptian, Greek and Roman traditions intertwine. During your visit, you will see underground halls, sarcophagi, burial niches and unique reliefs carved into the rock. Next on our programme is Pompey’s Pillar, one of the most famous ancient monuments in Alexandria and the largest monolithic column in Egypt. The column, about 27 metres high, was erected in the 3rd century AD in honour of the Roman emperor Diocletian. Then we will proceed to the Roman Amphitheatre. This is a unique monument of the Roman era and the only surviving amphitheatre in Egypt. It was built in the 2nd-3rd centuries AD and was used for performances, meetings and public events. During the tour, you will see marble rows, a stage and the remains of ancient structures that reflect the high level of architecture of the Roman period. A visit to the Roman Amphitheatre and a detailed commentary by a professional guide will complement your acquaintance with the ancient heritage of Alexandria. Next on the programme is lunch at a restaurant overlooking the sea. Check-in at the hotel.
In the evening (optional and at an additional cost), you can see Alexandria at night: Montaza Park is one of the most beautiful and romantic places in Alexandria, especially in the evening. Well-kept gardens, the Montaza Palace, the sea breeze and views of the Mediterranean Sea create an atmosphere of comfort and tranquillity. A walk through Montaza Park in the evening will allow you to enjoy nature, take beautiful photos and see the city from a different, more relaxed side. We will also stop for photos at Stanley Bridge. It is one of the most picturesque symbols of modern Alexandria. In the evening, the bridge is beautifully illuminated, reflecting in the waters of the Mediterranean Sea and creating a romantic atmosphere. Dinner
Day 2: Breakfast at the hotel and check-out at 9:00 a.m. Visit the famous Qaitbay Fortress. Qaitbay Fortress, one of Alexandria’s main attractions, is located on the Mediterranean coast. It was built in the 15th century on the site of the legendary Lighthouse of Alexandria, one of the Seven Wonders of the World. During the tour, you will see the fortress’s mighty walls, enjoy panoramic views of the sea, and learn about the city’s defensive history. Then we will visit the Alexandria Library, a modern symbol of knowledge and culture, revived on the site of the legendary ancient library. Today it is one of the largest cultural centres in Egypt and the entire Mediterranean. You will see the unique library building, museums, exhibition halls and reading rooms with panoramic sea views. Walk along the promenade, lunch. Departure to Hurghada at around 15:00.
The tour price includes individual transfer in a comfortable minibus for 2 days, the services of a professional historian guide, all entrance tickets as stated in the programme, lunches on the first and second days, hotel accommodation (3-4*) for 1 night, breakfast at the hotel on the second day.
